The Radioheads

Radiohead at Viccy Park last night was something special. Biggest gig i've been to in years (festivals aside) and the sound was as crisp, or even crisper, as if we we're in the back room of a pub.

This is what they played - don't blame me if it's inaccurate coz i was too drunk and having too much of a good time to take notes, so this came from some square on the interpipe:

Big Ideas (don't get any)

As the man says...

"Radiohead held an online contest to remix "Nude" from their album - "In Rainbows" This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.

This resulted in lots of generic entries consisting of a typical 4/4 beat, but with arbitrary clips from "Nude" thrown in so that they qualified for the contest.

Thom Yorke joked at the ridiculousness of it in an interview for NPR radio, hinting that they set the competition to find out how people would approach such a challenging task.

I decided to take the piss a bit, as the contest seemed to be in that spirit.

Based on the lyric (and alternate title) "Big Ideas: Don't get any" I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they're trying their best to do something that they're not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.

It doesn't sound great, as it's not supposed to."

Black Cab Sessions

Ok, i'm probably a little late to this particular party but the Black Cab Sessions are an excellent London version of the equally wonderful Blogotheque - but with more style, coz it's in London.

The Sunset Rubdown session was recorded before their Luminaire gig - which, as i mentioned before, was rather good by all accounts.

Hitting a bit of a sweet spot in gig terms at the moment. This time it was Sunset Rubdown at The Luminaire in Kilburn - truly amazing performance.

Indie Rock of the highest order - and tight as hell to boot.

Saw Bon Iver at The Social last night. I've said it before and no doubt i'll say it again - it was one of those gigs - truly awesome.

We were so close and the music was so beautiful it felt rude to take a photo, so i didn't. This is Justin on Later... last week though.

Low Expectations

Saw Patrick Watson at Scala last night. There's pretty much nothing i can say that would do the performance justice.

It really was one of those gigs.

After the support (Miracle Fortress's Five Roses was one of my records of the year last year, seen them twice now and they're a little loose live - still, they're about 12 years old too so they'll have plenty of time to get things together) we were in the smoking area and got chatting to Patrick - charming fellow, albeit a bit mad. Sean sarcastically said that we had low expectations of the gig so he shouldn't feel pressured. This went on to be a bit of a theme for the performance ending with the band 'improvising' a song called Low Expectations.
